ASUS G51JX-X5 Republic of Gamers 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop PC - Dark Brown

good expirience :)5

The "ultimate gaming machine :) " arrived in the original box shipping was very fast as always but ofcourse it better be because I had to pay 14$ for shiping.

The laptop had no deffects no dead pixels( something I was very woried about).

I have been using it for about a week now and I can say that I am impressed . Very fast machine I wish it came with an XP tho but thats fixable :D

It does get very hot on the left side but poor thing is just trying to get the heat out! No problems so far from that except some burned leg hair :D

What's intresting is tha price changeing. I bought it for 1279$ a few days after I recieved it the price went down to 1150$ and now it's 1380$ or so. You better time your purchuase or you might end up paying more for something that actualy costs less.

I recomend this product to anybody who is willing to pay that much for a laptop I couldn't find a better deal.More detail ...

Great Thin & Light5

If you are in the hunt for a high quality thin & light laptop this is a great option. That being said there are lots on the market and it is important to be sure of what you want/need. If you don't need the power of dedicated graphics card you can save money... others in the same price range have bluetooth WiDi optical drives etc... but all of them have 'compromises' in other areas. If you are willing to carry something heavier or accept less battery life you can find something much cheaper as well. All that being said I wanted a GPU fast multi-core CPU good battery life... and didn't want to carry an optical drive (I have an external when I need it)... also wanted a well made machine that would travel well. Did lots of research and after trying the competition I decided the U35JC was the right machine... build quality is awesome... everything works great and I have been getting 8+ hrs from the battery surfing the web. GPU handled video editing and games very well. Overall this is exactly what I wanted and I am extremely happy with this laptop. Really only one 'con' which isn't a big deal to me but is worth mentioning. The vertical viewing angle on the monitor is very VERY narrow. Looks AWESOME if you have it adjusted right but if you lean the monitor too far forward or backward it quickly looks bad. No issue when using alone but could be a pain if you are using the monitor in a group (watching movies) or to display to a crowd. Haven't really compared to other laptops with the same size screen so don't know if that is a standard 'con'.More detail ...

Sony VAIO Lifestyle VGN-P688E/Q 8-Inch Laptop - Black

You'll buy it for looks; definitely not worth the tag.1

Maybe I got a fluke but Sony's so-called "full laptop" computer in an 8" form factor is like trying to run Vista on your mom's old P3. Seriously this thing absolutely crawls. All this would be acceptable were it not for the very mediocre battery life (forget 4 hours I couldn't even manage 2 with moderately heavy use) when any other netbook (that's right netbook) for well under half the price outperforms it in battery life AND performance. Ironic; the 1.33Ghz processor really is a step down from the 1.66Ghz Atoms in netbooks despite what I've been told to the contrary about the different "architecture."

But that's just on the hardware front. It powers on fast enough but right from the get-go you're slammed with loads of bloatware and tons of programs that are slow to load into memory one after the other (that's right it's not even a dual core). These can be uninstalled--though not cleanly as they leave some registry junk data behind. But there's little that can be done about yet another software-related problem: drivers. The video driver on here is one of the worst experiences I've had to date with video displays. HD video was an absolute disaster even though the chipset (google "Poulsbo" or GMA500) claims it to be able to decode 720p HD video. So when I tried to play a simple HQ youtube vid (not even HD) and met with stuttering far worse than my friend's Asus Eee PC which cost about 350 I was understandably upset. As for the faster disk drive with the SSD this may be true. But when you can't run even basic productivity apps at full speed any HD speed increase was unnoticeable. My Eee for instance has a conventional "slow" HD but gets the job done (except for copying files) much more quickly.

A lot of this might be Vista's fault. But before you think of downgrading to the faster lighter XP let me warn you--you'll have even more issues with Sony's drivers. Linux? Forget about it; Intel's Poulsbo drivers are in a pitiful state there too. When the most appealing attribute of the system--the hi-res screen mind you--is nearly unusable with any other options one can't help but feel a bit ripped off. The webcam's quality isn't very good (the Eee wins again) and the WWan (mobile broadband) is locked to Verizon so don't think about other companies unless you "unlock" the chip: more time and trouble. The wireless-N support is supposed to be great but it was dodgy on my home network (maybe it was just my unit or config...or vista but again my other devices worked fine). They keyboard and ergonomics are fine but again the only good words for this unit for this price are surface-deep.

Parting advice: the reviews on this "Lifestyle PC" are low for good reason. I really wish I'd seen Amazon's reviews earlier. (This unit wasn't from Amazon but from Sony themselves).More detail ...

Acer Computer Aspire AS5542-5416 15.6" Notebook PC - Gemstone Blue

great for watching Bluray movies4

Purchased here (via J&R) great price on a bluray packing 15" laptop. 16:9 screen is great for watching movies. Screen looks great watched Ratattouie (Pixar) DVD and The Bank Job bluray. Both movies looked great. Sound is Dolby Digital and sounds great on headphones. Built in speakers sound terrible. Via even a cheap pair of headphones the sound is superb. I heard sounds on Ratattouie that I never heard before.

Here's some good news: The HDMI port supports both video (duh) and Audio! Yay! When connecting the HDMI to my receiver the ATI video driver popped up a warning that Audio is not supported. But clicking "help" opened a page basically saying that this is a generic message to warn users that a video card prior to Radeon 2xxx series does not support audio over HDMI but anything later (including the one on this laptop the 4200) DOES in fact support Audio. And a quick test (of those two movies) proved that it was Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The included movie player from Acer sent 1080p and 5.1 sound out the HDMI and it seems that MS Media player did too. So no additional software is needed to output to 5.1 with both BR and DVD. One final note on movie watching: The Acer movie player worked flawlessly but when I tried MS Media Player it stuttered often and was annoying. Figures. So stick with the included (and set as default player) Acer movie player.

Gaming is NOT recommended. I grabbed the first game disc I had lying around that I had both the disc AND the install key (always hard to find both when you need them) and it was Call of Duty World at War. It was awful. At the default 1024x768 it was an unplayable slide show and at the lowest settings (640x480 and every possible feature set to low) it was still an unplayable 5-10 fps. So that was disappointing but not a show stopper as we already have two high-end gaming computers in the house and really what did I expect for under 6 Benjamins?

I purchased this primarily to have a portable Bluray playing laptop and it fits the bill perfectly. As of this writing (2/1/2010) it is the cheapest Bluray playing laptop on Earth (or that I could find anyway and believe me I spent/wasted a lot of time searching!).

I have another 2-year old Acer Aspire also a 15" widescreen that is heavier with a worse keyboard than this model. I really am happy with the fit and finish of this model. The added keypad makes the keyboard sit left-of-center which takes a little getting used to as does the multi-touch touchpad which is sensitive and hitting it accidently with a 2nd finger causes the mouse to jump around. The vertical scrolling feature on the right of the pad isn't very accurate (had the same problem on my older Acer). We use Toshiba laptops at work and their scrolling feature is definitely better.

Some other non-issues: not many stickers. Not much bloatware at all. Comes with MS Works SE which DOES read and write word and excel files (you just can't set those as the default save/open option). Works SE is advertised based but it gives you the option to purchase the non-ad version. MS Office Student is 60 day trial. The 320GB drive is a single partition (yay!).

That's about it. A great deal on a bluray laptop that works great.More detail ...

TOPSELLER X100E MV40 160GB 1GB SYST11.6IN W7HP LED CAM

A great baby Thinkpad notebook5

I have used this as my main work machine doing office / productivity work for about a month now. It is a great small laptop especially for the price.

Build quality is superb. The X100e does not have a roll cage (i.e. internal metal skeleton) like some higher-priced X and T series Thinkpads but you'd never know it probably because the small size makes it largely unnecessary. The case is nice and stiff; the hinges are superb; and in general the build quality seems to be a cut above the T6x series at least. However I do miss the slightly rubbery paint from my other Thinkpads; this black matte paint is smoother. Still nice but not as nice.

The keyboard is the best I've used on a laptop. It is superior to the ones on my T60 and T61 previously my favorites.

The touchpad is also superb.

I've disabled the camera partly because I'll never use it and partly to save on battery life.

The screen is very nice and bright. In fact I have to turn it down from the brightest setting sometimes indoors as it can hurt my eyes due to the extreme brightness. The resolution is just fine for doing research writing etc. After a quick period of adapting the screens on my T6x series feel huge and overly tall by comparison. It is enough resolution to dock side-by-side windows and work with dual documents barely.

I haven't had any problems with heat. I think this may be because I don't stress the video card much if at all. The bottom gets quite mildly warm under prolonged use.

Performance is just fine in my book. With 9 windows of Google Chrome open two Word documents one Notepad text file Windows Media Player playing an HD movie two Windows Explorer windows Adobe Reader 9 opened to a large PDF file TrueCrypt drive encryption running AVG and Warcraft III-- RAM usage was around 1.2 gigs and processor use hovered around 60-70%.

I am not a big gamer. Playing Warcraft III against my 4-year-old though at full res with all eye candy turned on runs smoothly.

Going further on the performance angle the AMD MV-40 is often roughly compared with a Pentium M 1.6 GHz or thereabouts. That is probably pretty accurate but my machine feels a bit faster than machines of that rough vintage such as the T4x series. This is probably due to the SSD faster RAM faster better everything else etc. in the X100e. So you would essentially get a better-than-X41 performer in the X100e in my opinion for a budget price. Not bad for doing productivity work at all though it is no speed demon by today's standards.

I spent roughly $100 to upgrade to an X25-V SSD which noticeably improved performance. After the upgrade my Windows boot time is 25 seconds shutdown time is under 10 seconds sleep/standby mode time is 4 seconds and resume from sleep/standby is 2 seconds. The 160 GB drive my machine came with went into an $8 enclosure and now serves backup duty.

Battery life easily goes beyond 5 hours for the type of work I do (before the SSD upgrade it was generally around 4:30). I have the processor set to max out at 60% in battery mode and the screen is generally set to around 5-6 brightness which is usually enough.

I still don't have Photoshop loaded on this machine. I think that's where the processor's shortcomings would be most noticeable processor- and ram-hungry applications like that. But this is not a slow machine IMHO.

I also don't think most people would need more than 2 GB of RAM unless using something like Photoshop where they wanted better performance. Simple multitasking that most people would do probably wouldn't need more than 2 GB. Even with music running in the background a slew of browser windows etc. I just don't see how it could stack up to 4 GB. It seems to be an increasing practice to load a machine with 4 GB or even 8 GB of RAM but I wonder how many eager buyers realize that the RAM they're buying will never be used.

Of course I am running Windows in a minimal way. I guess some OS features could consume extra RAM although I wouldn't know what they are. I tend not to like a lot of junk running in the background unless it will actually help me run my programs or the machine.

The machine is very attractive and professional-looking. People constantly ogle it and I've received many questions about it. I personally prefer the size to that of the X200 (the X100e is noticeably smaller).

The lack of an optical drive is definitely a negative for me. It makes it much mroe of a hassle to install things. If you don't already have an external drive take this into account.

The lack of the Thinklight is also a downer. It is one of my favorite Thinkpad features and I wonder why Lenovo couldn't have charged an extra 25 cents or whatever it costs for a single LED light and a bit of wire. I suspect it was intentionally left out to differentiate the X100e more from the X200.

Another really disappointing drawback for me is the tiny half-size media card reader. An SDHC card will only insert halfway meaning I cannot have a built-in always-ready backup device for my most important files. I understand the machine is tiny but they still could have squeezed in an extra few millimeters for a bigger card reader. The card reader also has no documentation apparently meaning I have no idea if any of the formats it supports (which I cannot figure out) would fit completely inside the reader. I plan to follow up with technical support on this.

The ordering process was not so smooth. Lenovo customer service sent me an .xls file telling me to update it and send it back them to start my service contract. Eventually they caved on this after I griped. It just didn't seem fair to make people install Microsoft Office or similar program to get what they bought and in any event I didn't have an office program installed at the time. The machine itself was back-ordered and took weeks to produce and the status was seldom updated. The machine and accessories came piecemeal: first the extra power supply followed weeks later by the machine followed later by the neoprene sleeve.

However I am really glad to be able to take advantage of Lenovo warranty service. I bought next-business-day support for three years. I have never been anything but impressed with IBM or Lenovo warranty service and since this is my work machine I needed it.

All in all this is my favorite notebook ever. I would buy a Thinkpad netbook if they made one but this is not a netbook. Netbooks are characterized by super-cheap price excellent battery life poor performance and usually by poor ergonomics and durability. This machine offers perfect ergonomics great durability enterprise-class service options middling battery life and middling performance. I'm not bothered by the "netbook" name some apply to this machine but I would not could not do my everyday work on a netbook. This machine I can.

The single biggest drawback for me is the battery life. But if I wanted longer than 5 hours of battery life and wanted better performance and even better durability I would have saved up for an X200 series. For what it is this machine is perfect for me.More detail ...

Acer Aspire w/ Intel Core i5-430M and a 500GB HDD

Five Star Review 99% "Good" but here are the "Bad" points5

The 6491 configuration of Acer's AS5740 boasts Intel's new Core i5 processor and a quick review of the spec sheet reveals that this configuration is amazingly "tricked out" for the price. For those wondering the "Gemstone" blue color is very dark almost black.

I'm extremely pleased with the notebook but offer the following for those who may be considering this purchase. Note that I actually ordered a replacement from J&R because of the following concerns but will ultimately be keeping the original.

First you'll need to live with the fact that the speakers are simply no good in the AS5740s. They'll pass at low volume and are OK for general computing i.e. Windows system sounds but for music and movies -- not so good. At increased volumes they vibrate a bit and the different settings available i.e Dolby Surround etc. just change the sound without really improving it. I thought I had a dud machine with bad speakers but the replacement was just as bad and other reviews point to the speakers as one of the few criticisms. If you plan to use this as a mobile media player then you may not be satisfied. Again for general use it's OK.

Second as with many of the newer energy saving hard drives the HD in the AS5740s (in my case a Western Digital Scorpio 500G drive) frequently parks its heads - causing a noticeable click (or tink) that was driving me absolutely crazy. I would describe the sound as kind of like a camera shutter and at first I thought it was a Windows system sound -- perhaps the Internet Explorer "Start Navigation" sound i.e. the click you get when you move to a new web page. I muted all Windows sounds and it was still there so I knew it was mechanical. When the replacement machine made the same sound I researched the issue and found that it was indeed the heads parking -- a common complaint with many different brands of hard drives these days.

It's a power-saving feature that can be modified with any Hard Drive management software. I tried a program called Drive Power Manager (drivepowermanager dot com) and adjusted the settings to high performance 254 and disabled the standby mode and now the HD is quiet as a mouse. In effect you just need to keep the HD working so it doesn't constantly park. And you can always go back to the power-saving settings if you wish or if the sound does not bother you (unlikely).

So bottom line I'm keeping the original machine sending the replacement back to J&R (who were wonderful throughout) and rate the AS5740-6491 with 5 stars notwithstanding its less than impressive speakers. The other features more than make up for that shortcoming.More detail ...

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 019624U 13.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

Excellent Value5

We have numerous laptops in our household. Our oldest daughter has an Apple laptop through school. I have a Dell Inspiron through work. I also have an ASUS 1000H netbook for myself an Acer 1410 with SU3500 processor for our younger daughter and an older 15" Toshiba Satellite for my wife. I purchased the 13.3" Lenovo Edge with SU7300 processor as a replacement for my wife's computer. She had been complaining about the poor battery life and poor WiFi signal of the Toshiba for months but did not like the small screen of either the 11.6" Acer or the 10.1" ASUS. She had also been complaining of wrist pain. This unit seemed to have the best of all worlds. Light weight long battery life very nice screen an incredible keyboard and a fairly reasonable price tag. We have not had the laptop very long but my wife seems to really like it especially the keyboard track point and multiple mouse buttons. Build quality appears to be much better than the Acer although there does appear to be a slight flex in the lid as you open and close it. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to perform the initial set-up. In about 30 minutes I had configured WiFi had the computer automatically find drivers for our all-in-one HP printer (a first usually need CD) and had downloaded and installed Open Office Panda Cloud Antivirus free PrevX3.0 McAfee SiteAdvisor and IOBit Advanced System Care (primarily for Smart DeFrag and SmartRAM). This probably has more to do with Windows 7 Professional than the Lenovo Edge. The only minor negatives that I can think of are: 1) the touch pad seems less responsive than that of my ASUS although I did not try to update drivers or change settings and 2) the 32-bit version of Windows 7 limits you to 3 GB RAM although 3 GB of DDR3 RAM is more than sufficient for my wife's needs. Very happy with purchase thus far. Still debating whether AMD version may be better value IF you do not mind less battery life. I have read some recent reviews of Lenovo laptops complaining about bloat-ware but personally did not notice anything egregious on the Lenovo Edge. Especially when compared to the HP laptop that I owned prior to my ASUS netbook OR to the Toshiba Satellite that the Edge is replacing.

UPDATE: Been using Edge for a couple of weeks and extremely happy with everything EXCEPT touch pad. Touch pad works fine as a normal mouse but virtually none of the multi-touch functionality is usable. Shame considering the utility of the multi-touch features on my ASUS 1000H netbook (toggle between windows zoom in & out rotate scroll vertically & horizontally page back & forth etc.) UPDATE2: Starting to get hang of touchpad. I am able to use more multi-touch features. Tapping gestures work fine. Scrolling and paging work OK but sometimes have to try a few times. Still have not gotten rotate to work very well. Multi-touch does appear to work but takes some time and effort.More detail ...

Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q870 TruBrite 18.4-Inch Gaming Laptop

A wonderful computer for the price!4

After exhaustive research I decided the Toshiba Cosmio x505-870 powerhouse had the best specs for the best price. This was the next in a long line of Toshiba laptops for me. I was hooked after my first one about 10 years ago. Due to the design durability price and support Toshibas have always been my first choice and I would and do recommend them to everyone that asks. The Cosmio X505-870 is my new passion. My only complaints are minor and cosmetic. The slick surface of the keyboard and the awkward multimedia and power buttons are the only hindrances I have found. The new positive design elements far outway the problems though. The toned-down color scheme the disable button for the touchpad and the beautiful 18.4 screen(although not full 1080p) to name a few. There were some issues with the BIOS that Toshiba addressed directly so I would suggest updating the BIOS immediatly after creating your restore disks. I don't think it would be possible to regret the purcase of this system and I recommend it whole-heartidly.More detail ...

Great Laptop!5

I have owned many other laptops but this one is really special. The price is great it was delivered to me in a day and I was online and getting things done in less than half an hour. Easy to use great keyboard and I love the number keypad on the side (no need to purchase anything separate if you use the number keys often). The screen size is great and the quality of the graphics is exceptional. I've only owned it a few days but I absolutely love this laptop and would recommend it to anyone!More detail ...

Acer Aspire Timeline AS5810TZ-4274 15.6-Inch Laptop - 8+ Hours Battery Life

Awesome Computer5

This is a great laptop. I read reviews and info about this for more than a month before laying down the cash for it. I've been extremely happy with it. It's thin and sexy. It's light (especially for a 15 inch laptop). It's extremely cool. The performance is good but not amazing. I mostly work with music editing and notation software and this laptop has handled all them fine. I play games online with it and I have yet to find a game that it can't handle (it should be noted I only play games from the browser and have no idea how a real computer game would do but I know since this doesn't have a graphics card it probably wouldn't do well with 3d graphics but I dont really know.) For everyday computing this computer has all the power you need. The 15 inch model is great too. The keyboard is full sized (which was somewhat of an adjustment after using cramped keyboards for so long) and the number pad is extremely helpful (at least to me).

The battery life is why you buy this computer. All day computing is no lie. I used to own a Dell and a Toshiba which got about 3 hours battery life at best and then up to 10 minutes as they got old. It's been hard to break the habit of packing my power adapter when I leave but I've never needed it. I can go to school all day take my computer to class work in the library or cafeteria and never need to worry about running out of juice. If I crank it up to "High Performance" I can get a solid 5 to 6 hours of battery on "Power Saver" I get an easy 8 and a half and if I turn off the WiFi I can get a little more then 10 hours. I've never never never run it down completely during normal use.

Overall a great computer at a great price. Everything you need with an unbelievable battery life. Free yourself from the wall socket and buy this computer!More detail ...
